I got a haircut last weekend, but went the safe route. I went to Toni & Guy, which seem to have a hair salon in every city I have lived in so far. It was an expensive cut, but it looks perfect. I left the planning to Olivia and already found their salon on a visit to Holland Village last month. Only after my har cut, I have done some investigations into the Singaporean hair culture and made some shocking discoveries.

You can have your hair cut here for anywhere between S$10 and S$2000. Almost every mall has a fast-cut hair dressers like EC House that do cut for S$10 in 10 minutes. In the more posh malls like Ngee Ann City (where I went for lunch again today), you can get the famous S$2000 haircut at Le Salon. Which will be similar to what Singapore’s most renowned hair dresser David Gan charges for his time at Passion Hair Salon at Palais Renaissance.

Singaporeans are fussy about their hair, but most of the people go to their local HDB barbershop and get a S$8 to S$10 haircut. Not sure where my next cut will happen, I did like the Toni & Guy experience.

I have heard some funny stories too about haircuts..One friend at lunch was telling me about her recent hair cut here on the island…Apparently it is not uncommon to have many people dealing with your hair in the process of getting a cut..I did notice a lot of extra staff standing around at Toni & Guys too…She had a total of 4 people touch her head at various times…1st the Stylist..then someone to run a brush thru her hair and take her to the basin, a 3rd person to wash the hair then a 4th to return her to the basin and comb it out..The 1st-Stylist then returned for the cut and then the 2nd returned to do the blowdry..Interesting..Or pehaps its just the very cheap labour here..A barista at Starbucks makes $5.00 an hour, someone working at Borders makes $6.00 an hour- I can only imagine on this scale that the hair dressers apprentice are on around $2.00 an hour..Scary!

@Olivia – True, I have one stylist, one sweeper with a little brush to brush away the hairs in my face, one uber-sweeper for the floor and a washer. Even the payment process involved a troop of people, one to do all calculations, one to take my money, the stylist to shake my hand and give his card and a line of girls to wave me farewell.

2000$ haircut… hmmm…. I wonder if they could fix my deforestation problem ;-) . Back in the days when I needed a hair cut (as opposed to clippers), I’d got to Tony&Guy. Good high street experience. I do enjoy the “barber” experience you get in some posh hotels in India… where they cut your hair…. lather your face with old spice soap…. shave you w/ a straight razor… scalp massage and all that stuff…

I’ve lived a decade in Paris and I still wait till I return to Singapore for my haircut. $8 (just hair cut) in a salon run in a HDB flat. She knows how to cut Asian hair better than most French hairdressers I’ve been to, the conversation is more interesting and the scalp massage during the shampoo is great. Don’t see why I should pay 40 euros when I can just pay 8 bucks.

The men in my family go to this Malay barber in our neighbourhood shopping centre. $10. And the shop’s really interesting with vehicle number plates from different parts of the world. Only 2 -3 guys work in the shop and they can trim your nose hair if you want them to.

You pay lots of money in posh salons for the location, glassy souless deco and lots of hands doing this and that for you.
