Adventures of a World Traveler…

Today we went shopping in Vivo City again and bought a NEW rice-cooker. Yes, we used the old rice-cooker several times, but the minimum amount of rice for the cooker was way to much for the 2 of us. Even before we introduced portion-control in our kitchen, we would throw away more rice than we ate. I know, our modern rice-cooker can keep rice warm for 24 hours, but it’s not often you eat rice 2 days in a row of you’re not Chinese.

We were a little confused and misled by the amount of cups required for one serving. Logically, one cup would serve one portion. That’s why we initially bought a rice-cooker that takes 3 to 8 cups (in case we have guests). Only recently we found out that an average portion of rice is 1/2 a cup. If 3 cups is the minimum amount in your rice cooker and 1/2 a cup is a serving, the rice-cooker is obviously too BIG. So, today we bought the smallest rice-cooker we could find, one that takes one cup as well.

To make the buying of a rice-cooker even more confusing, like with shoes and clothes, there’re diffrent measurements of “one cup” in different parts of the world. Typically, a rice-cooker cup is 180ml, which represents a traditional Japanese cup. I am not sure if the Singaporeans measure with the same cup. But I am sure we’ll find out after we unpacked the new cooker.

2 cups could feed a family of 5 so a rice cooker that takes 3-8 cups definitely is way too big :-) . But then I love rice so I would be able to eat one cup on my own.

A great place to go to for household stuff is Tangs in Orchard Road. It’s a world in itself. In the basement of the departmental store where you will smell wonderful smells the minute you walk in (cooking demos), find almost anything you’ll need for your kitchen etc.
